Connecting the UK public sector on climate
What we do
Welcome to the Collective for Climate Action (CfCA). We host and maintain the Cross Government Climate Hub (CGCH) on the online community platform, Gov News. The CGCH is a safe and supportive space for 1500+ UK public sector workers and civil servants to network, collaborate, share resources and good practice, ask/answer questions, and access peer support. We also deliver educational and climate wellbeing events led by working groups, and more.
Why we exist
Action taken to address the climate and biodiversity crises in the UK public sector is often fragmented and lacking in collaborative coordination. The Collective for Climate Action seeks to connect workers from across the UK public sector to facilitate systemic action on these joint crises.
News: The Collective for Climate Action is Working to Become a Community Interest Company (CIC)
We’re thrilled to share that the Collective for Climate Action (CfCA) is in the process of becoming a Community Interest Company (CIC). This is an important step in our journey, and we’d like to update you on what this means, why we’re making this change, and what it means for the future of CfCA.

What We’re Doing
The CfCA is aiming to transition to a CIC structure, which is a social enterprise, a type of not-for-profit organisation specifically designed to benefit the community. This means that our mission—to connect and empower public sector workers to address the climate and biodiversity crises—will remain at the heart of everything we do and now with additional safeguards to ensure our work continues to deliver real benefits to our community.

Why We’re Doing It
Becoming a CIC provides several advantages:
-
Reinforcing Our Mission: The CIC framework will ensure that our activities and any funds we might receive directly benefit the community we serve.
-
Transparency and Accountability: As a CIC, we will have formal reporting requirements, ensuring transparency in how we operate and use funds.
-
Access to Funding: The CIC status opens up new opportunities to apply for grants and funding streams tailored to organisations with a social mission. This will allow us to do much more.
The change to a CIC structure aligns perfectly with our commitment to promoting collaboration and systemic action across the public sector.
What It Involves
Over the next few months, the team of CfCA Coordinators will be working through new policies and processes and readying our application to become a CIC, with us most likely completing this by the end of March 2025. Coordinators will be stepping up to become Directors, however, all discussions and decisions will still be made by all Coordinators. Once we are successfully registered, we can then move forward to apply for funding, particularly grant funding, which will allow us to develop and deliver current and new services. We will keep all of our members updated with how things are progressing, and we welcome any new ideas or suggestions that will help us to continue our mission. As always, we want to ensure that the things we do are the things that will be best support our community.
What the Future Holds
Becoming a CIC opens up exciting opportunities for the CfCA:
-
Stronger Collaboration: We’ll continue to host and expand the Cross Government Climate Hub (CGCH), offering even more opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and peer support.
-
Enhanced Events and Programs: With access to new funding streams, we aim to increase the number and scope of events and initiatives we deliver.
-
Greater Impact: By strengthening our structure, we can amplify our impact in addressing the climate and biodiversity crises across the public sector, charities, and academia.
This change is a step forward in ensuring the sustainability and growth of the CfCA, allowing us to continue serving and supporting our community effectively for years to come.
